Antique Paperweights and Related Objects

1. Extremely rare Clichy close concentric piedouche weight with a central pink and green rose surrounded by concentric complex canes, including arrow canes, moss canes, cog canes, pastry mold canes and edelweiss canes, in pink, lilac, cherry, cadmium green, Persian blue, ruby and white. One row alternates between lilac pastry mold canes and eleven green and white roses. Another row is composed entirely of moss canes. The arrangement is set inside a footed pedestal formed with green and white staves.

"For precision and color harmony the finer concentrics are unsurpassed-one looks down upon a formal garden bordered by vertical staves in alternating colors, a garden of pink with blue and lavender, eggplant purple against midsummer green, aquamarine against wine red, all centered, perhaps, about a big Clichy rose."-The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. (See The Art of the Paperweight, p. 90; Sotheby's New York March 12, 1986 sale, lot 22; Christie's London June 25, 1982 sale, lot 133; Christie's New York October 27, 1981 sale, lot 119; The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights, pp. 136-137; L. H. Selman Ltd. Summer 1995 auction, lot 2; Sotheby's New York December 10, 1980, lot 129; Sotheby's London October 30, 1967 sale, lot 37; Sotheby's London July 2, 1957 sale, lot 134) Height 2 3/8", diameter of dome 2 7/8". $18,000-25,000

2. Very nice Clichy cinquefoil garland on lace weight with a five-looped ruby garland of pastry mold canes around a concentric arrangement of cog, floret, pastry mold and bull's-eye canes, in cherry, pink, lime, thalo blue and white, on a white lace ground. Emerald pastry mold canes and pink cog canes decorate the inside and outside of the garland's loops.

"All in all, Clichy paperweights represent the best in classic paperweight making."-Paperweights: "Flowers which clothe the meadows". (See The Art of the Paperweight, pp. 87-88; The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights, pp. 131-132; Paperweights: "Flowers which clothe the meadows", pp. 48-53; Paperweights for Collectors, pp. 63-64) Diameter 3 1/8". $3000-5000

3. Outstanding Clichy colorground circular garlands millefiori weight with a large central pink and green rose, set in a rich turquoise colorground, surrounded by circlets of cog, edelweiss and pastry mold canes, in pink, ruby, cherry, white and cadmium green. Rose-colored cog canes have been placed at the periphery of the weight, between each garland. Emerald green cog/bull's-eye canes decorate the center of each circlet of canes. With one of the largest known rose canes, this piece exhibits a commanding presence that distinguishes it from other Clichy millefiori weights. Clichy artisans demonstrated the exquisite coloring they were able to achieve in the design. This paperweight was formerly part of the Robert Kreel collection. It was exhibit number 53 in The Art of the Paperweight-Challenging Tradition traveling museum exhibit. Painted in white enamel with exhibit accession number.

"With its rich turquoise ground, this piece conjures images of flowers floating on the surface of a clear blue pond. Green cog canes take on the role of lily pads, while the bold central rose cane is suggestive of a large pink lotus (a flower identified in the nineteenth century as Rosae Plena, also renowned for the remarkable size it achieves). The formal circular garlands of millefiori flowers evoke the movement of ripples in the water."-The Art of the Paperweight-Challenging Tradition. (See Annual Bulletin of the Paperweight Collectors' Association (1978), p. 41; The Art of the Paperweight-Challenging Tradition, p. 34; L. H. Selman Ltd. Summer 1995 auction, lot 23; Nouveau Drouot November 27, 1986 sale, lot 71; Presse Papiers de Cristal: Panorama des Collections Françaises, fig. 6b; Richelieu Drouot March 18, 1991 sale, lot 94) Diameter 3 1/4". $11,000-15,000

4. Nice Clichy close concentric millefiori mushroom weight with a chain of twelve pink and green roses amidst circlets of complex pastry mold and edelweiss canes, in lilac, cadmium green, cherry, pale yellow, cobalt blue and white. An outer row of canes has been pulled down to a grid-cut ground to form a thick white stem.

"One of the most popular paperweight forms, that of the nosegay or bridal bouquet has been given the pedestrian name of mushroom... Circles composed of roses, favored by Clichy, enhanced the sense of bouquet..."-Paperweights: "Flowers which clothe the meadows".

"Mushroom bouquets are among the most beautiful and technically challenging weights produced during the classic period."-The Art of the Paperweight-Challenging Tradition.

"These weights, while sometimes referred to individually as baskets, bouquets, or nosegays, have, for reasons that are visually obvious, come to be known-somewhat less poetically-as mushrooms."-Glass Paperweights in The Art Institute of Chicago. (See The Art of the Paperweight-Challenging Tradition, p. 30; Glass Paperweights of The Bergstrom-Mahler Museum, plate 20, ill. 474) Diameter 2 3/8". $3000-4000

5. Clichy C-scroll garland millefiori weight, with a large central pink and green rose. This arrangement is composed of six C-shaped millefiori garlands of cog and pastry mold canes, in cherry, pink, cadmium green, lilac and white, about a rose encircled by a garland of cobalt blue pastry mold canes on a white lace ground.

"Clichy cleverly signed this paperweight by creating a garland composed of C-shaped crescents. Around the concentric circles of millefiori in the center of the piece, the crescents form the petals of an abstract flower shape. Garland weights have an especially effective impact on a lace ground, which sets off the canes like brilliant jewels."-The Art of the Paperweight-Challenging Tradition. (See Antique French Paperweights, p. 105, fig. C195; The Art of the Paperweight-Challenging Tradition, p. 33; One Hundred of the Most Important Paperweights, p. 79; Sotheby's New York December 18, 1989 sale, lot 118; Sotheby's June 15, 1985 sale, lot 380) Diameter 2 3/4". $7000-12,000
